Mandatory Health Insurance Programme 'Fiscally Unsustainable'
August 2008 | Industry NewsThe US government's 'pilot project' for universal healthcare - the Massachusetts Mandatory Health Insurance Programme - has been dealt a blow in an open letter from more than 250 physicians stating that the plan was 'fiscally unsustainable'. In the letter doctors say that few low-income families can afford premiums for even the 'skimpiest coverage', and that future funding will be difficult as the scheme will increase dependence on private insurance. Indeed, the doctors appear to be more supportive a single-payer system, similar to the UK's National Health
