Government Planning Compulsory Health Insurance

The government of Ukraine has announced that it is to introduce a mandatory medical insurance system, as it seeks to take advantage of the rapidly expanding economy. The Minister of Health, Vasyl Knyazevych, claims that the present situation satisfies neither the population nor medical workers. The reforms reflect plans published before recent legislative elections by the parties who subsequently came to power.The Our Ukraine and Bloc Yulia Tymoshenko (BYuT) parties published a health insurance plan ahead of the Rada elections in September 2007. This called for a system funded by employer contributions, with the state funding insurance contributions for pensioners
