Disease Epidemic Averted

A rapid, coordinated response to the devastating floods which hit the south-eastern state of Tabasco and neighbouring Chiapas in late October and early November in the wake of Tropical Storm Noel seems to have averted the disease epidemics that some health officials had warned could strike those displaced by the flood waters. Estimates that 22 people died as a direct result of flooding or landslides could have been massively eclipsed by disease epidemics such as malaria, cholera and dengue fever within the estimated 100,000 displaced people if not for the responses of politicians, aid agencies and pharmaceutical
