Novartis Has Heart Set On Vaccines

Novartis - formed in 1996 through the merger of two Swiss drug firms Sandoz and Ceiba-Geigy - is the largest drugmaker in Switzerland, leading rival Roche by around US$5bn in annual sales. Growth has been strong over the past decade, propelled by an increased focus on healthcare and especially innovative pharmaceuticals. Since 2000, Novartis has gained US FDA approval for 15 new molecular entities (NMEs), more than any other major research-based multinational, and growth in 2006 was largely driven by two of its home-grown drugs.
