This factor, alongside rapid population growth and the rising contribution of the private sector - much like in the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) - has driven a significant annual growth of the country''s pharmaceutical market. The private sector is primarily stimulated by the exclusion of expatriate workers from public healthcare schemes and the increased demand for medical tourism, with many patients now seeking cheaper, but still high-class, treatment in GCC hospitals rather than in the US
