Drug Market Faces Challenging Times, Yet Also Great Opportunity
December 2006 | BMI ViewSouth Africa is the best developed pharmaceutical market in Africa, with drug expenditure standing at US$2.88bn in 2005. However, as BMI cautions in its South Africa Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Report, the health sector in the country faces many problems, including the burden of poverty, unemployment, as well as epidemic levels of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. In fact, despite its developed status, per capita drug spending in South Africa was just US$63.5 in 2005, while out of a total health expenditure of US$17.2bn only US$6.2bn was attributed to the public
