Gedeon Richter Buys Romanian Pharmacy Chain
December 2006 | FDI AlertTo penetrate Romania's expanding pharmacy market, Hungary's leading drugmaker Gedeon Richter has acquired local pharmaceutical retailer Bioplus Pharm for EUR600,000 (US$797,000). Bioplus has 100 outlets in the capital Bucharest, making it a mid-sized player in the Romanian market. BMI views the acquisition as a further sign of Richter's foreign focus. Furthermore, we are encouraged by the rationale behind the deal, considering Romania's economy is expected to growth significantly after EU accession in January 2007, leaving more people with disposable income for consumables like over-the-counter medicines.
