Hopes Fade For Drug Patents
October 2006 | Legal NewsParaguay's reputation on international intellectual property rights continues to deteriorate, with recent events further justifying the country's pariah status within the pharmaceutical sector. Anger in the research-based industry has been stoked by the national patent office's decision to revoke some 104 "abusive" drug patents, in flagrant violation of TRIPS. Most recently, officials rejected 14 'emergency measures' to protect patents filed by local representatives of R&D-based multinationals. Few now expect Paraguay to abandon its protectionist stance any time
