Expensive Drugs Receive Reimbursement

November 2006 | Product Launch

The Italian Medicines Agency (Agenzia Italiana del Farmaco - AIFA) has added 25 innovative, and therefore expensive medicines, to the Prontuario, its reimbursement list. Ordinarily, this would have boosted the value of country's pharmaceutical market. However, in an effort to cap spending, the AIFA has simultaneously approved 15 low-cost generic drugs that will compete with branded medicines that previously enjoyed a monopoly for their respective indications. As such, BMI is maintaining its projections for Italy's drugs market, which is currently valued at approximately US$30bn and expected to reach US$36.6bn by 2010.
