Ontario Introduces Pharmaceutical Reforms

The Ontario government also plans to designate generics as interchangeable with brand name drugs that are not listed on the provincial formulary. Off-formulary interchangeability will be introduced in March 2007 and has been welcomed by the generics industry, which predicts CAD$30mn (US$27mn) savings for private payers already in the first year. A new code of conduct is being developed for the generics sector, further defining the terms and forms of rebates. Additionally, the Ontario government intends to fund more innovative research projects, which will demonstrate the value of pharmaceutical and expects the branded drugs industry to contribute to the required
