As can be expected, the incidence of heart disease is higher in the more developed South American states that have seen an improvement in healthcare outcomes in recent decades. Puerto Rico, a US territory, also has high rates of ischaemic heart disease, reflecting the more advanced status of the health system. Meanwhile, reported death rates from ischaemic heart disease are among the lowest in the region in the less developed Central American and Andean states.
