The price of medicines is rising in Qatar and is now the highest in the GCC region, according to local press reports. A number of factors including Qatar's small population and the small size of the market, which means that manufacturers cannot benefit from economies of scales, have driven up prices. Meanwhile, the relative wealth of the population has meant that, traditionally, there has been scant demand for low-cost drugs.
