Confusion Reigns On Andean Patents Policy
May 2006 | Legal NewsVenezuela has protested new data exclusivity legislation necessitated by US free trade agreements (FTAs) with Andean neighbours Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. Government officials claim that allowing originator firms to block copy drug manufacturers' access to confidential test data will obstruct public access to medicines. Venezuela and regional ally Bolivia have boycotted the FTA negotiations, with Venezuela now threatening to withdraw from regional trade bloc the Andean Community
