OTC Orlistat Is Approvable

The FDA has designated UK drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)'s Alli - the over-the-counter version of Switzerland-based Roche's Xenical (orlistat) - as approvable, enabling registration and launch later this year. If Alli receives approval, it will become the first lipase inhibitor to attain non-prescription status. The product is forecast to cost between US$12 and US$25, and patients are recommended to take the drug for only 6 months.
