Regulator Strike Disrupts Pharmaceutical Sector
April 2006 | Company Finance AlertLocal observers, including multinationals Novartis and Boehringer Ingelheim, have warned that a strike by workers at Brazilian drug regulator Anvisa could impact government plans to offer cheap treatments for chronic diseases, due to the likely impact on raw materials supplies. Many of Anvisa's 474 staff ceased work on February 21, demanding an end to staff reassignment and the creation of a 'career plan' for workers. The strike is understood to be disrupting inspections of consignments of imported APIs, upon which Brazil is almost wholly dependent.
