Industry Slams Japan's Regulatory Reforms

Stakeholders in Japan's drug industry have criticised the government's handling of its five-year industry plan. The strategy was first outlined in 2002, and a draft version of the new five-year plan is expected later this year. Although the government's overall vision has been praised by a wide cross-section of the industry, a lack of clear targets has led to uneven implementation of the plan. Red tape has been widely blamed for the fact that many innovative medicines are introduced later in Japan than in other developed markets.
