HIV/AIDS Gaining Foothold In Middle East
June 2006 | Market Trend AnalysisThe number of people infected with HIV/AIDS in the Arab world is rising rapidly, with 760,00 new cases being reported in 2005 alone, according to local press reports. This represents an increase of 300%, making the Middle East the second highest in the world in terms of new infections. The UN has warned that Arab countries are on the cusp of a future crisis unless they implement effective programmes to arrest the spread of the disease. Medical experts predict that by 2015, 16mn people, or 4.1% of the region's total population could be HIV positive.
