Middle East Wakes Up To Dangers Of Smoking
June 2006 | Market Trend AnalysisLocal press reports in the UAE claim that 14% of young males and 24% of adults smoke, while the UAE's National Cancer Registry Report of 2001 indicates that lung cancer accounts for over 10% of deaths among young nationals. Alarmed by these statistics, the UAE's Central Department of Health Education has formed a partnership with Swiss drugmaker Novartis to help spread awareness about this deadly habit, though distributing posters and pamphlets. Volunteers from Novartis, which markets the nicotine replacement therapy Nicotinell, have also visited a number of malls in recent months in order to spread the message.
