South African Activists Seek ARV Price Cut

South Africa's Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) has warned that it may take US drugmaker Merck & Co to the country's Competition Commission in order to force the company to hand out more generic licenses for its patented ARV efavirenz. Presently, Merck has only granted one generic license for the drug, to South Africa's Aspen Pharmacare. This in effect has had the impact of merely transferring Merck's monopoly over the drug to another company.
