BMI View: Singapore's pharmaceutical trade contracted in 2011, while growth in medical devices trade slowed sharply. We attribute this downturn to the general weakness in the global economy. In line with this correlation, we expect the biomedical trade figures to remain relatively subdued in 2012. However, Singapore's relatively stable macroeconomic and political situation, coupled with the country's highly educated population, will support pharmaceutical and medical devices trade over the long term.
