Healthcare Reforms Outlined To 2020

BMI View: Bulgaria's public healthcare system remains underfunded. Short-term measures to reduce non-payment of medical insurance may seem encouraging but with the central government unwilling to provide additional funds, and with long-term reforms seemingly focusing on efficiency savings rather than providing new resources, underfunding in healthcare system will continue. Short-term changes to the healthcare system are being driven by the new Minister of Health, Desislava Atanasova. The 2012 update of the National Reform Programme and the Convergence Programme, which is a broad-based account of reform programmes to be achieved in the country, also outline the long-term healthcare goals.
