Tighter Reimbursement System Key To Moderate Short-Term Growth

The government plays a significant role in the funding of medicines but should do more to improve access to innovative medicines for all the population. The passage of the drug reimbursement act in May 2011 was disappointing due to the capping of reimbursement expenditure as a percentage of the public healthcare budget but it does not exclude the potential for significant rises in total healthcare spending in the years to come. Somewhat encouragingly, efforts to tackle drug prices have focused on wholesale and retail margins, rather than manufacturers' prices.
