BMI View: We believe a healthy local pharmaceutical industry is important for both the economic development of African countries and the provision of public healthcare. For too long, international donors have been happy to purchase drugs from Asian suppliers, ignoring the positive impact that a local industry and job creation can have in Africa. However, with poor local standards of manufacturing and a lack of technical expertise, most donors care more about alleviating the short-term humanitarian need than solving Africa's more complex long-term developmental problems.
