Medical Device Expenditure Rebounds, Encouraging Outlook Supported By Healthcare Modernisation

BMI View: Ukraine's medical device market rebounded positively in 2010, with the market projected to return low double-digit growth over BMI's five- and ten-year forecast horizons. While Ukraine's per-capita expenditure is particularly low, the absolute size of the market is attractive in comparison to the Baltic states and even eastern European markets such as Romania and Bulgaria. However, we would highlight the challenging operating conditions in the market, including corruption and a weak legal framework compared with more advanced markets. We believe international medical device makers will continue to prefer to export products into the country, and have limited local operations in the market.
