July 2011 | Industry Trend AnalysisBMI View: Algeria's 2010-2014 development programme, launched by the government to modernise the health sector, presents opportunities for medical device manufacturers. The government plans to build 172 hospitals, 45 specialised health centres, 377 clinics and 1,000 treatment rooms, which will all require large quantities of new equipment. The government's policy of inhibiting the importing of products that can be produced locally tend to be more directed towards pharmaceuticals, but continue to present a challenge as Algeria remains highly import-dependent on more technologically advanced equipment such as scintigraphic scanners. BMI anticipates this being the area of biggest opportunities for multinational manufacturers.
