HIV Rate Significantly Above Expectations

BMI View: Although South Africa's anti-HIV/AIDS strategy appears to be in trouble - as the prevalence rate is far higher than expected - it is possible that part of this growth could be attributed to people with the virus living longer, as access to antiretroviral (ARV) drugs has increased significantly. The increased prevalence underlines problems with statistical reporting and the stigma attached to HIV/AIDS.
