April 2011 | Industry Trend AnalysisBMI View: Legislation that all Indian pharmaceuticals will now have to be tracked and traced will make the country's generic drugs destined for Africa slightly less competitive in pricing, but more reliable in terms of quality. The new regulations are good for sub-Saharan Africa's development where eradicating counterfeit pharmaceuticals is one of the pharmaceutical industry's biggest challenges. Multinational drugmakers should be aware of the new regulatory environment and may need to develop their own anti-counterfeit measures if tracked packages become a significant unique selling point for Indian generic drugs
